Why did I start GWD and what am I doing?
If you’ve been around me for more than 15 minutes over the last 5 years, you’ve probably heard me bring up Personal Finance (despite the eyerolls from my wife, Amanda). And if you indulged me, you’d see me geek out on it. To anyone who would listen I would preach and preach and PREACH to anyone that would listen how easy it was to learn about investing on your own, but still found that people just didn’t want to know.
No matter how many books or reminders or (sometimes unwanted) suggestions I made, many people who “wanted more money” wouldn’t do anything to help themselves. That is what I have started Generational Wealth Development. Everyone wants more money, everyone wants to know what to do with their money, but hardly anyone will take the time to figure it out. It’s a chore for most, but I absolutely love learning about the tricks and strategies of personal finance and there is nothing I love more than teaching others about it.
So, what is it that I am doing as a Financial Planner and how am I different from everyone else?
Most people know what a financial advisor does: you give them your money and they invest it for you. What I am doing is different. I fully believe that almost everyone can do better than a financial advisor if they learn how to do it, but who the heck has time/desire to learn about it on their own? So that’s what I’m doing with GWD. My goal is to help you figure out how to do this yourself. I want to teach you how to open investment accounts and work with you on finding the right investments to suit you.
And I’m doing this for a flat fee. Your traditional financial advisor charges you a fee for Assets Under Management (AUM), EVERY SINGLE YEAR. That adds up. I teach people that you can invest for yourself and by doing that, not having to pay a financial advisor 1.5% for managing your money. I’m going to show you how to manage your own money, by yourself without that annual percentage fee to an advisor, saving you thousands of dollars in the future.
I think of this as an advanced college course using your own life as a case study. We’ll do a deep dive into your plan for your future and take a look at what you want your life to look like outside of work and what kind of legacy you want to leave to future generations. Finances aren’t scary, they’re a tool to let you have the best life possible. You need to be in control of your own situation and plan how to use that tool to its greatest potential, and I’m here to help you do that.
On this blog I’m going to outline different strategies that I use in financial planning, describe my processes, and further highlight why it’s important to learn all of this. I’m also going to mix in some of my hiking and family adventures because life is fun, and I enjoy sharing those experiences.
